Detailed Itinerary

 

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Kasese

 

Your Muganzi Safaris driver will pick you up after breakfast for a scenic journey towards western Uganda, with a lunch stop in Fort Portal. Continue to Kasese and check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Destination: Rwenzori Mountains National Park

 

Day 2: Hike to Nyakalengija Hut

 

Begin your ascent at Nyakalengija. Trek through dense equatorial vegetation and trace the peaceful Mubuku River as you climb to the Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m). Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and other primates along the trail.

Destination: Nyabitaba Hut

 

Day 3: Trek to John Matte Hut

 

Depart Nyabitaba early, crossing the Kurt Shaffer Bridge and moving past the Mubuku confluence. After lunch at Nyamuleju Hut, enjoy sweeping views of Mount Speke and Mount Stanley. Continue through open heather and moss-covered forest to John Matte Hut (3,415m).

Day 4: Hike to Bujuku Hut

 

Leave the valley and enter the higher alpine zone as the trail becomes steeper and more adventurous. Enjoy views of glaciers and towering peaks as you press forward toward Bujuku Hut, surrounded by spectacular mountain landscapes.

Day 5: Ascend to Elena Hut

 

Continue through the upper valleys with views of Alpine vegetation and the stunning Savoia and Elena Glaciers. Climb onward to Elena Hut (4,560m), the base for your summit attempt the following morning.

Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak – Descend to Kitandara Hut

 

Rise before dawn for the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek — summiting Margherita Peak (5,109m). Cross ice, rock, and glacier sections to reach Africa’s third-highest point. After celebrating your achievement, descend to beautiful Lake Kitandara and spend the night at Kitandara Hut (4,020m).

Day 7: Trek to Guy Yeoman Hut

 

After breakfast, climb to the Freshfield Pass with panoramic views stretching into the Congo. Continue down through rugged terrain to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,260m), surrounded by waterfalls and alpine vegetation.

Destination: Guy Yeoman Hut

 

Day 8: Descend to Nyabitaba Hut

 

This final leg takes you down steep trails along the Mubuku River, eventually rejoining the original route. Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Return to Kasese

 

 

Hike down to Nyakalengija, where your Muganzi Safaris driver will be waiting. Transfer to Kasese and check in at Hotel Margherita for a well-deserved rest.

 

Day 10: Departure

 

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or at Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight — ending your unforgettable Rwenzori Mountain adventure.
