Visit  Murchison Falls National Park one of Uganda’s most captivating destinations, and it can be visited all year round. The park offers a wide range of exciting safari activities such as boat cruises on the Nile River, hiking to the top of the falls, wildlife game drives, and bird watching, among others. Many travelers dream of visiting this scenic park to witness its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant wildlife.

Seasons in Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda experiences a generally warm tropical climate throughout the year, divided into two dry seasons and two rainy (wet) seasons:

  • Short Dry Season: December to February

  • Long Dry Season: June to October

  • Short Wet Season: October to November

  • Long Wet Season: March to May

The best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry seasons (December–February and June–October). These months offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities, as animals tend to gather around water sources, especially along the Nile River.

Why Visit Murchison Falls During the Dry Season

During the dry months, vegetation is thinner, and animals are easier to spot as they come out to drink water along the Nile. Game drives and boat safaris become more rewarding, and you’ll likely see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lions, and other iconic African wildlife.

In contrast, during the rainy season, animals often hide deeper in the wilderness, and some park roads can become muddy and difficult to navigate. Unless you have a strong 4×4 vehicle, accessing certain areas may be challenging. Sudden rains can also interrupt planned activities.

What to Expect in Each Season

  • Dry Season (June–October & December–February):

    • Excellent wildlife viewing opportunities

    • Easier access to all parts of the park

    • Clear skies and comfortable game drives

    • High competition for accommodation—book early!

  • Wet Season (March–May & October–November):

    • Fewer tourists and lower prices on accommodation

    • Lush green scenery and excellent bird-watching

    • Roads can be slippery and challenging to access

    • Occasional heavy rains may limit outdoor activities

Even with rain, the park remains beautiful—after a downpour, the skies clear, the air freshens, and the landscapes come alive again.

Conclusion

Murchison Falls National Park is a year-round destination with something special to offer in every season. However, if you want to make the most of your safari—spotting more wildlife and enjoying clear, sunny days—the best months to visit are June and July. Whether you visit during the lush green wet season or the vibrant dry months, Murchison Falls guarantees an unforgettable African adventure.
