According to Baganda tradition, a woman named Nakangu Tebatuusa gave birth to twins made of water — the rivers Bwanda and Ssezibwa. While Bwanda flowed east toward Lake Victoria, Ssezibwa journeyed west, overcoming obstacles with the help of the spirit Nalongo Kkubo.
Because of this myth, the falls became a sacred site believed to hold supernatural powers.
