Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda: A Complete Planning Guide

Gorilla Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda December 17, 2025

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda offers one of Africa’s most powerful wildlife experiences. From misty rainforests to close encounters with endangered primates, Uganda is the best destination for travelers seeking meaningful and responsible adventure.

This guide by Muganzi Safaris explains everything you need to know before trekking gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda. You’ll learn where to go, how permits work, age limits, fitness levels, and practical tips to help you prepare.

Gorilla Trekking Locations in Uganda

Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Most gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which protects several habituated gorilla families.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors

Bwindi National Park is divided into four trekking sectors:

  • Buhoma & Ruhija – located in the northern part of the park

  • Rushaga & Nkuringo – located in the southern Kisoro region

Each sector offers a unique trekking experience, scenery, and accommodation options. Muganzi Safaris helps you choose the best sector based on availability, fitness level, and travel route.

Another trekking option is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, part of the Virunga Mountains and bordering Rwanda. This park is less crowded and ideal for travelers seeking a quieter experience.

What a Gorilla Trekking Day Looks Like

A gorilla trekking day starts early. After breakfast, you’ll travel to the park headquarters for registration and briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

Each trekking group includes a maximum of 8 visitors, accompanied by armed rangers and guides. Porters are available to help carry bags and assist on steep or slippery sections.

Trekking usually begins at 8:00 AM. Depending on where the gorillas were last seen, the walk can last from one to five hours. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are allowed one full hour with them. This rule protects the gorillas from stress and human overexposure.

Importantly, trekkers move at a comfortable pace. The one-hour viewing time only begins when the whole group arrives, so there is no pressure to rush.

After the trek, you return to the starting point, where tipping guides and porters is appreciated.

How to Get Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and must be booked through licensed tour operators.

For this reason, Muganzi Safaris handles the entire permit process on your behalf after confirming your safari booking.

Information Needed for Permit Booking:

  • Full passport names

  • Nationality

  • Date of birth

  • Passport number

  • Preferred trekking date and location

  • Alternative dates (recommended)

⚠️ Once permits are issued, dates and locations cannot be changed.

Where to Go Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Uganda offers several excellent chimpanzee trekking destinations.

Kibale Forest National Park (Best Option)

Kibale Forest is Uganda’s top chimpanzee trekking location, with a success rate of over 90%. Treks are conducted in the morning and afternoon and are well organized.

Alternative Chimpanzee Trekking Locations

For travelers on a budget or with limited time, other options include:

  • Budongo Forest (near Murchison Falls) – about 80% success rate

  • Kalinzu Forest – affordable and scenic

  • Kyambura Gorge – dramatic landscape, moderate success rate

  • Bugoma Forest – closer to Kampala, cash payment on site

Muganzi Safaris advises on the best option based on your route, budget, and expectations.

Tips for a Better Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trek

To enjoy your trek fully, preparation is key. Here are essential tips:

  • Wear strong hiking boots with good grip

  • Use a walking stick (provided at the start)

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers

  • Carry a light rain jacket

  • Bring enough drinking water and snacks

  • Wear a face mask when close to gorillas (mandatory)

  • Hire a porter if needed—it also supports the local community

  • Take moments to observe without using your camera

Minimum Age for Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking

  • Gorilla trekking: Minimum age is 15 years

  • Chimpanzee trekking: Minimum age is 12 years

These limits are strictly enforced by park authorities.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking does not require extreme fitness. However, a moderate walking ability is recommended.

The difficulty depends on:

  • Weather conditions

  • Terrain

  • Distance to the primates

Many trekkers are in their 60s and 70s. Porters and walking sticks greatly reduce the challenge, making the experience manageable and enjoyable.
