Lake Bunyonyi October 24, 2025

Discover Uganda’s Most Beautiful Lake with Muganzi Safaris

Nestled in the scenic highlands of southwestern Uganda, Lake Bunyonyi is one of the country’s most peaceful and breathtaking destinations. Its name means “Place of Many Little Birds,” and it truly lives up to it. Surrounded by rolling green hills, this calm freshwater lake is the perfect spot to unwind after a safari or gorilla trek.

Located about 460 kilometers from Kampala and only two hours from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Lake Bunyonyi is a natural stopover for travelers exploring western Uganda or crossing to Rwanda.

What Makes Lake Bunyonyi So Famous?

Lake Bunyonyi’s charm lies in its stunning natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The lake stretches for about 25 kilometers and is surrounded by terraced hills that glow green throughout the year.

It’s dotted with 29 small islands, each with a unique story and cultural history. For the local Bakiga people, the lake is both a source of life and a place rich in legend.

What makes it even better? Lake Bunyonyi is free from crocodiles, hippos, and bilharzia, making it one of the safest natural lakes in Africa for swimming. It’s the perfect spot to relax before or after your gorilla trekking experience.

A Lake Formed by Fire and Time

Over a million years ago, volcanic activity shaped the Kigezi region, creating the Great Rift Valley. Lava from one of the Virunga Volcanoes flowed into the Ndego River, blocking it and forming what we now know as Lake Bunyonyi.

Today, it’s considered Africa’s second-deepest lake, reaching up to 900 meters in some places — deep enough to stack more than 50 giraffes on top of each other!

The Islands of Lake Bunyonyi

Each of the 29 islands has its own story, charm, and mystery.

 Punishment Island (Akampene)

This small island carries a sad but powerful story. In the past, unmarried girls who became pregnant were abandoned here as punishment. Today, it serves as a reminder of how far communities have come and how culture evolves over time.

 Bwama Island (Leper’s Island)

In the 1920s, British missionary Dr. Leonard Sharp built a leprosy treatment center here. He offered care to people rejected by society. Today, the old hospital has been turned into Bwama Primary School, and visitors can learn about this inspiring story of compassion.

 Bushara Island

Bushara Island is an eco-friendly paradise run by the Lake Bunyonyi Development Company. It promotes sustainable tourism, supports local craft makers, and provides comfortable lodges for visitors.

 Kahugye Island

Home to the Lake Bunyonyi Eco Resort, this island offers luxury accommodation and a mini wildlife sanctuary with zebras, impalas, and Uganda kobs.

 Bucuranuka Island (Upside-Down Island)

According to legend, an old woman cursed this island after villagers refused to share their beer. The island flipped over, drowning everyone on it. Its name “Bucuranuka” means “upside down” in the local Rukiga language.

Things to Do at Lake Bunyonyi

 Canoeing and Boat Cruises

Explore the lake on a traditional dugout canoe or motorboat. Glide across calm waters, visit islands, and soak in the peaceful surroundings.

 Bird Watching

Home to over 200 bird species, Lake Bunyonyi is heaven for bird lovers. Look out for weavers, herons, and kingfishers — and enjoy their songs echoing over the lake.

Village Walks and Cultural Tours

Meet the friendly Bakiga people and learn about their traditions, dances, and crafts. Visit local schools, interact with artisans, and experience authentic Ugandan hospitality.

Hiking and Cycling

The terraced hills around the lake offer great trails for hiking and cycling. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views that are perfect for photography.

Swimming and Zip Lining

Yes — you can safely swim in Lake Bunyonyi! The cool, clean water is irresistible after a day of exploring. For adventure lovers, try zip lining across the lake — a thrilling new activity that lets you soar over the water.

Gorilla Trekking Nearby

Lake Bunyonyi is the best base for gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park. After an exciting trek, you can relax by the lake and reflect on your adventure.

How to Get to Lake Bunyonyi

You can reach Lake Bunyonyi easily from several directions:

  • By Road: About 7–8 hours from Kampala via Mbarara and Kabale.

  • By Air: Fly from Entebbe to Kisoro or Kihihi Airstrip, then drive for 1–2 hours to the lake.

  • With Muganzi Safaris: We organize safe, comfortable transfers and guided trips directly to Lake Bunyonyi.

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit Lake Bunyonyi are June to September and December to February — Uganda’s dry seasons. The skies are clear, the roads are easier to travel, and outdoor activities are more enjoyable.

If you prefer fewer tourists, visit in March–May or October–November, when the landscape is greener and lodges are quieter.

Lake Bunyonyi offers all kinds of accommodation, from budget campsites to luxury eco-lodges. Some popular options include:

  • Lake Bunyonyi Eco Resort – on Kahugye Island

  • BirdNest Resort Bunyonyi – lakeside luxury and great dining
