A Lake Formed by Fire and Time
Over a million years ago, volcanic activity shaped the Kigezi region, creating the Great Rift Valley. Lava from one of the Virunga Volcanoes flowed into the Ndego River, blocking it and forming what we now know as Lake Bunyonyi.
Today, it’s considered Africa’s second-deepest lake, reaching up to 900 meters in some places — deep enough to stack more than 50 giraffes on top of each other!
